Objectives

Many people will be familiar with honeycomb sandwich structures. These are commonly used in naval and aerospace construction industries and in electromagnetic shield applications. The challenge for the future development of these structures is how to enhance the shapes of these materials to improve their structural integrity and to be proposed for multifunctional applications with sensing and actuating capabilities, such as structural health monitoring and microwave absorbers.

The CHISMACOMB project (CHIral SMArt honeyCOMB) began in April 2005 and is funded by the European Union Framework 6 research programme. Our partners include production companies, universities and technological institutes from across the EU. Over the 3 years of the project the partners will develop and test a variety of honeycomb forms in a groundbreaking programme to accelerate the development of new structures for industrial applications.
